Campaign Financing

At a recent gathering of political candidates, I was told, “No one can win a Congressional race unless they raise a million dollars.”

I whole-heartedly reject this notion.

I’m not a millionaire, and maybe you’re not either. But “we the people” can gather our resources to pay for printed materials, phones, office supplies, a staff member or two, and a little bit of advertising. So your hard earned five, ten or twenty dollar contribution is welcomed and very much appreciated. I pledge to be a good steward and hope you will agree with my decision to donate any leftover funds to charity. Thank you in advance for your kind support.

Remember, money isn’t the engine that’s going to win this election. We the people will, because this election is about values that money can’t buy.

The Public Action Campaign Fund tells us, “We cannot honor the words of Lincoln – “government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from this earth” – while our political system segregates us into those who can buy access and those who cannot. We cannot preach democracy to the world when the leaders of our country are forced to sell access and influence to those who finance campaigns. We cannot sincerely teach our children the ideal of “one person, one vote” when those with money speak louder than those without.”

The campaign may accept contributions from an individual totaling up to $2,100 per election. Federal law prohibits contributions to the campaign from corporations, labor organizations and national banks; from any person contributing another person’s funds; from foreign nationals who lack permanent resident status; from federal government contractors; and from individuals under age 18. By clicking this contribute button, you affirm that your contribution is from personal funds and not from funds otherwise prohibited under law. To comply with federal law, we must use best efforts to obtain, maintain and submit the name, mailing address, occupation and name of employer for individuals whose contributions exceed $200 per election cycle.
