I write this endorsement on Mother's Day 2008, recalling Julia Ward Howe's words in 1870, proclaiming the first Mother's Day in the wake of our terrible war between North and South. "Why do not the mothers of mankind interfere in these matters to prevent the waste of that human life of which they alone bear and know the cost?
The answer seems clear. In order to "interfere in these matters," mothers must be elected to Congress. Think about it. If there were just one real mother, just one, among the president's national security advisers, do you think she would have acquiesced?without loud protest?in blithely sending our young men and women off to kill and be killed in a war she knew to be unnecessary?
